A preview for the expansion The Shadow Odyssey was announced recently.

"What we're really looking to do is re-invent these zones for EverQuest II," Ferguson said. Some of the areas and dungeons that players will explore in The Shadow Odyssey include dungeons with names like Guk and Befallen and larger zones such as Mistmoore, Najena and the Sebilisian Empire -- names well-known to old-school EQ players. He is quick to emphasize, however, that these zones aren't merely rehashes of the content players may have explored in the original game. "We don't just want to copy over the assets and the floorplans and call something Mistmoore," he said. "It was more a matter of finding a way to get to the spirit of the place and re-invent it for EverQuest II. We want these new places to be just as memorable but also stand on their own."

The new expansion will also add other elements to some of the game's current systems. The "Achievement" system -- an alternate advancement track that allows players to gain special powers for their abilities by achieving certain in-game goals -- is moving to a level cap of 200 with requisite new content and goals to support further character customization. Five new Heritage Quests will be unveiled that will let players go after cool new items reminiscent of treasures from the original game. The game's Shard (or barter) system is also getting some much-needed love. This particularly excites Ferguson, "People are really tired of just killing a mob a zillion times for the slight chance of getting the item they want. By trading points for items, they can always be assured of getting something they want."
